Breast Implant Registry – DBIR

Breast Implant Registry – DBIR

Dutch Breast Implant Registry (DBIR)

Each year, approximately 12,000 women in the Netherlands receive breast implants for either reconstructive or cosmetic purposes. There is a significant need for independent and reliable information about the quality of breast implants. The DICA Dutch Breast Implant Registry (DBIR) aims to monitor and ensure the quality of breast implant surgery in the Netherlands.

Quality Registry for Breast Implants
The DBIR collects data on patient characteristics, implant details, and outcomes of breast implant surgeries performed in the Netherlands. It is the only nationwide quality registry dedicated to breast implant care that captures longitudinal data, including patient profiles, surgical details, and implant information.

This comprehensive approach allows the DBIR to uniquely provide all the necessary data to evaluate and improve the quality of care. It also supports shared decision-making between patients and healthcare professionals. In addition, the DBIR enables the monitoring of implant quality and facilitates the tracking of implants and patients in case of potential recalls. This makes the DBIR an invaluable resource for all patients with breast implants in the Netherlands and internationally.

History and International Collaboration
The DBIR was developed by the Dutch Society of Plastic Surgery (NVPC) in 2015. The NVPC’s Clinical Audit Board members ensure the quality, analysis, and interpretation of the registry’s data. Furthermore, DBIR implements its core dataset as part of the International Collaboration of Breast Registry Activities (ICOBRA). This network connects countries with active breast implant registries, fostering international collaboration and knowledge sharing.

Results

Various projects focus on Breast Implant-Associated Illness by linking the DBIR data with the national general practitioner database and through the use of surveys completed by breast cancer patients with and without breast implants. This enables further investigation into whether breast implants can cause physical symptoms and how often this occurs.

Patient Group

This registry collects data from all patients who have breast implants (including tissue expanders) placed, replaced, or removed.

All implant details are recorded in the breast implant registry. Patients can check the (Dutch) registry of their implant(s) via implantaatcheck.nl.

  • Learning and Improving

Our dashboards provide weekly updates on the DBIR participants’ results compared to the national average (benchmark information). This allows them to evaluate the care provided and implement improvements where needed.
